Cyprus Travel – Sport & Adventure Training

Issue. The HQ BFC J7 PD department has been receiving emails from UK units requesting what is the criteria for using the RAF Air Trooper.

Aim. Therefore, the purpose of this email is to give clear direction and guidance on what priority Sports and Adventure Training (AT) will receive when applying to this office for an RAF Air Trooper. So, UK units can plan accordingly and manage expectations.

HQ BFC J4 Movements. The following information has been approved by HQ British Forces Cyprus J4 Movements.

HQ BFC will Approve the following as Duty Flight at Public Expense:

  • Sports. Category 1 and 2 sports (and category 3 by exception, when authorised) as listed in JSP 660 Part 1 Chapter 1 Annex D, are classed as duty activities and are permitted to travel at public expense on a RAF Air Trooper and are therefore entitled to a duty flight. Category 4 sports have no entitlement to carriage as duty or concessionary passengers. The window for the booking is the same as any other duty bookings, however the risk of cancellation due to higher priority duty passengers accepted.
  • ATG(A) Sponsored Expedition Slots in Cyprus. All UK units applying for a ATG(A) Sponsored Expedition Slot in Cyprus are permitted to travel at public expense on a RAF Air Trooper, and are therefore entitled to a duty flight.
  • Type 4 Adventure Training (AT) Courses. All UK units applying for a AT course here in Cyprus inclusive of Joint Service Adventurous Training Wing Cyprus are permitted to travel at public expense on a RAF Air Trooper and are therefore entitled to a duty flight.
  • Pre-Entry Cadet Forces / Potential Officers. Members of the pre-entry cadet forces (Officer Training Corps / University Air Squadron / University Royal Naval Unit) on officially sanctioned AT are permitted to travel at public expense on a RAF Air Trooper and are therefore entitled to a duty flight at public expense.

HQ BFC will Allocate Concessionary Travel Fares to the Following:

  • UK Overseas Sports Visits (OSV). All UK OSV do not attract a duty flight at public expense, and therefore be authorised a concessionary travel fare.
  • AT Type 3 Overseas Expeditions. All UK units planning a AT Type 3 Overseas Expeditions do not attract a duty flight at public expense, and therefore be allocated a concessionary travel fare.
